America’s shocking execution spree of 2024 and biased justice system

The United States is witnessing its most intense burst of executions in nearly three decades, forcing us to confront the stark realities of capital punishment in the modern era. In the fall of 2024, the machinery of death kicks into high gear, revealing deep-seated issues within our criminal justice system.

From South Carolina to Oklahoma, five states are synchronizing their clocks to end five lives. This isn’t just a coincidence; it’s a chilling snapshot of a system in crisis. To put this in perspective, consider that in 2023, there were only 24 executions in the entire year. In 2022, that number was even lower at 18. Now, in a single week, we’re witnessing a quarter of last year’s total.

This surge harks back to 1997 when Texas executed five people in a seven-day span. But there’s a crucial difference: back then, it was one state. Today, it’s a coordinated effort across five different states, each with its own story, each raising its own set of troubling questions.
