Greece is dying

--

Greece is currently battling an intense heatwave that is expected to grip the nation for at least a week, with temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F). This scorching spell follows the hottest June ever recorded in Greece, which also marked a global record according to the European Climate Service. As the mercury rises, the risks of devastating wildfires and health emergencies are mounting.

Record-breaking heat and Elevated Fire Risks

The heatwave’s timing could not be worse. After a mild and dry winter and spring, Greece’s vegetation has become tinder-dry, creating the perfect conditions for wildfires. Experts have identified this period as the most severe wildfire risk in two decades. Greek authorities are on high alert, with over 2,000 wildfires already tackled since early June. Despite the quick response, the danger remains omnipresent, and officials have issued stark warnings about the very high risk of wildfires.

The wildfires pose a significant threat not only to human lives and property but also to Greece’s rich biodiversity. Forests, which are home to a variety of wildlife, are particularly vulnerable. The destruction of these habitats can have long-lasting ecological impacts, disrupting ecosystems and the species that depend on them.
