How the Anti-Abortion movement has been losing ground in the US

The issue of abortion rights and the anti-abortion movement in the United States has become increasingly complex and controversial, especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Historically, Roe v. Wade, decided in 1973, had established a constitutional right to abortion nationwide. For decades, overturning Roe was a primary goal of the anti-abortion movement. In June 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe in the Dobbs decision, allowing states to ban or severely restrict abortion.

The current legislation is different across the country. After Dobbs, abortion regulation returned to the states. Some Republican-led states quickly enacted near-total bans on abortion, while other states, often Democrat-led, moved to protect abortion rights.

Ballot initiatives have become a key battleground. Since Dobbs, there have been several state-level ballot initiatives on abortion. Surprisingly to many, even conservative states like Kansas and Kentucky voted to protect abortion rights. In 2024, nine more states will vote on constitutional amendments related to abortion rights.

The political implications are significant. Abortion has become a major issue for the 2024 presidential election. Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, are making abortion rights a centerpiece of their campaigns.
