Prabowo Subianto’s Indonesia to take a more assertive role in foreign policy
As Indonesia welcomes its new president-elect, Prabowo Subianto, the nation anticipates a shift in its foreign policy approach. Prabowo’s promises signal a more assertive and independent stance, rooted in the principles of diplomacy, negotiation, and regional solidarity. This fresh outlook, encapsulated in what he calls the “Asian Way,” could redefine Indonesia’s role on the global stage.
Prabowo Subianto has championed the “Asian Way” as a cornerstone of his foreign policy. This philosophy emphasizes resolving issues through dialogue and direct meetings among regional players, eschewing foreign interference. Reflecting on Southeast Asia’s tumultuous history of wars, colonization, and external meddling, Prabowo asserts that local solutions are the key to lasting peace and stability.
“We solved it without foreign interference, we talked, we met,” Prabowo explained, highlighting a preference for homegrown diplomacy over external pressures. This approach aims to foster stronger, more resilient regional bonds, capable of navigating conflicts and fostering cooperation independently.
