Russia’s obsession with the Mediterranean sea
Russia’s longstanding interest in the Mediterranean Sea is rooted in a complex interdependence of historical, geopolitical, and strategic motivations. This interest spans centuries and includes various facets that highlight the region’s significance to Russian ambitions.
Access to warm water ports
One of the most pressing motivations for Russia’s focus on the Mediterranean has been the access to warm water ports. Russia’s geographical position means that many of its major ports in the Baltic and Black Seas are ice-bound for significant portions of the year. This seasonal freezing limits Russia’s ability to maintain a year-round maritime presence and damages its naval operations and trade. The Mediterranean Sea, however, provides a crucial gateway to warm water ports, allowing for uninterrupted naval and commercial activities throughout the year. By establishing a presence in the Mediterranean, Russia can enhance its ability to project naval power and participate more robustly in global trade routes, thus boosting its economic and military standing on the world stage.
