The EU’s Big Four plans for ensuring supply chain security

--

The European Union has recognized the critical importance of securing a stable and sustainable supply of raw materials essential for its strategic industries. This recognition has led to comprehensive plans, especially by the “Big Four” member states — Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. These countries are crucial in driving the EU’s efforts to manage the supply of critical raw materials (CRMs), which are indispensable for the green and digital transitions and the resilience of sectors like defense and aerospace.

Strategic Initiatives by the Big Four

Germany is focusing on strengthening its domestic mining capabilities and investing in recycling technologies to reduce dependence on imported raw materials. The country is also leading initiatives in the EU to secure international partnerships for diversified supply chains, particularly in Africa and Latin America.

France is prioritizing the development of its mineral resources and boosting research in CRM alternatives. The French government is also working on streamlining permitting processes to accelerate domestic mining projects, while also engaging in diplomatic efforts to form strategic alliances with resource-rich countries.
