--

In the age of digital media and social activism, the call for genuine representation in films and television has never been louder. Audiences are demanding diverse characters that reflect the real world, pushing back against tokenism and superficial inclusivity. However, despite some progress, many major networks and studios still fall short, often reducing minority and LGBTQ characters to fleeting moments designed to appease rather than empower. This article explores the ongoing struggle for meaningful representation, spotlighting key examples from recent years and urging a deeper commitment to authentic storytelling.

The Case of Finn: From Hero to Sidekick
The Star Wars franchise, a cultural juggernaut with a global fanbase, seemed poised to take a progressive leap with the introduction of Finn, played by John Boyega, in “The Force Awakens.” As a Black protagonist, Finn’s character was initially set up to be a central figure in the new trilogy. However, as the sequels unfolded, his role diminished significantly. Critics argue that Disney’s desire to cater to the lucrative Chinese market, where racial representation can be a contentious issue, played a part in sidelining Finn. This not only disrespected the character’s potential but also alienated fans who had hoped to see a Black hero lead the charge.
