Why Google has chosen Nuclear Energy to power the AI revolution

Google has made headlines with a groundbreaking deal to purchase nuclear energy from small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by Kairos Power. This agreement marks a significant step in the tech giant’s efforts to secure clean energy sources for its operations, particularly to meet the growing energy demands of its data centers driven by artificial intelligence technologies.

The deal involves Google procuring up to 500 megawatts of power from a fleet of six or seven SMRs, with the first reactor expected to be operational by 2030 and the remaining units by 2035. Kairos Power’s SMRs utilize a molten-salt cooling system and ceramic, pebble-type fuel, which enhances safety and efficiency by operating at low pressure. This design aims to simplify construction and reduce costs compared to traditional large nuclear reactors.

Google’s partnership with Kairos Power goes beyond a typical customer-supplier relationship. The tech company is actively involved in the development process, allowing for shared learning and cost certainty as the technology advances. This approach demonstrates Google’s commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions that can support the future of technology and AI.
