As Poland commemorates its National Independence Day, the nation stands at a pivotal moment in its history, grappling with both the weight of its past and the challenges of its future. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has recently emphasized the critical need for a robust and united Poland, capable of asserting its sovereignty and security amidst a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. His absence from the official celebrations, due to a scheduled medical procedure, did not diminish the impact of his message, which resonated deeply with Poles across the country.

A Call for Strength and Unity

Tusk’s warning that “independence is not given to anyone for free and forever” underscores the precarious nature of national sovereignty in today’s world. His call for a “strong, well-armed Poland” as a unifying national task highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. With Poland now the leading defense spender in NATO, allocating over 4% of its GDP to defense — and with plans to increase this to 4.7% by 2025 — the nation is clearly positioning itself as a formidable force in European security.
