The humanitarian catastrophe happening in Sudan is one of the most severe in recent history, yet it remains largely ignored by the international community. Despite the immense suffering of the Sudanese people, the conflict has been overshadowed by other global crises. Here’s why the world seems to have forgotten Sudan — and why we can’t afford to.

Competing Global Crises

The war in Sudan is being eclipsed by high-profile global events such as the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These crises dominate media coverage and diplomatic focus, pushing Sudan to the periphery of international concern.

Lack of Political Will

Major global powers appear reluctant to intervene or exert significant pressure to resolve the conflict. Strategic interests from countries like China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates complicate efforts, as they are not incentivized to push for peace. The United States, too, has been criticized for the lack of a response, further diminishing the prospects for international action.
